SEMINARS :
Mexican white boy
Seminar prewrite
The mask Danny and Uno have to wear are the masks of the white kid when they are around the baseball team and their school just so they can fit in because they want to make the team and not be judged. Also he has to switch back to being a ghetto, gang member, pair of boys so they could fit in with Danny's uncle and cousins and Unos friends.
The book mexican white boy is socialized stereotypical story about Danny, A Mexican whiteboy. Danny has been socialized to be a mexican delinquent and hes looked at like he doesn't belong in white culture and he's half white and is still looked at like a full mexican.
The insights I learned about race and economic class from Mexican whiteboy was that it doesn't quite matter what race you are but more what your financial stance is in the economy. If you are really rich and your White, Black, Asian, Mexican, etc, you won't be looked at as a delinquent, you will be looked at as a very nice looking person. But if you're wealthy you are automatically a loser and thug. So through this book i've learned that i need to be wealthy to be looked at in a positive way. And or live in a rich place.

Seminar reflection
The comment I really liked during the seminar was when Brinn said "Danny is too white for his family but too dark for his peers”. I thought this statement was interesting because it explains why he doesn't have a lot of friends, its because he doesn't fit in. He can't find white friends and he seems To be an outcast from his family but still empathized for being a sweet more innocent kid by his uncle and cousins.
The connections i made between mexican white boy and myself were that I used to be in that poor position although i was young at the time and hardly realized that i was poor. It still impacted my life by knowing at the time I couldn't get nice things but i still wasn't really close to being in the position Danny and Uno were in.
I was not in the seminar but i feel that i would of done well. I usually talk a lot in seminars The move I could work on would be domination, I sometimes talk to the point where others don't get their words in. Also I need to invite more students to talk.
On page 82 my favorite line is when it says “He goes to wind up and flings the last ball at the fake catcher: speed gun reads: 92. The crowd goes nuts behind Danny. Its my favorite because he proves he’s better at pitching than all of the kids there, and i was happy he did it in front of liberty. Also he proved he could be better than them at pitching while drunk out of his mind.

Brave new world seminar pre write
Seminar Pre-write for Brave New World
By: Gabe Garcia
The overall message for Brave New World in my opinion was in the beginning that sexual pleasures and taking advantage of one another and being very close minded about natural birth and different people outside of the society. This trend of sexual pleasures and close mindedness stayed as the main theme of the book until a few of the people in the society (Bernard and lenina), went to a reservation in New Mexico and met indians that believed in love and marriage and natural birth. This disgusted the people from the other society because they were born from a test tube and they were created from one one embryo and multiplied to make several children on which they are then treated and inflicted upon to make them like and dislike several things.
The overall message in the end was that this society is an abomination and people die and get lied to because of it.
Brave New World had made me think of happiness as more of a short lived emotion that can be created by very small things such as getting people to laugh at a joke or making someone smile.
Ive also realized it seems to be more of something like a trophy and what i mean by that is it seems like people try to achieve happiness in fake objects. It seems human try to find happiness in devices or even smaller things like a bug or a joke that you cracked being laughed at but even if people do find happiness in that, it seems that they keep striving for a different type of happiness that some can't achieve because of the way they are or because they don't try hard enough. Also the way happiness has affected me through this book is i try to make myself happier by relying on less materialistic things and being with my family and friends. Happiness for me is feeling like if i wasn't there with my friends they would miss me.
When John says “Nothing in civilization cost enough” he means that in this civilization everything is handed to them and they never have to pay a lot of money for anything. Everything here is too easy for them to appreciate.
I think about 80% of our society is is made up of comfort and the other leaking twenty percent is relatively hard to find because a lot of people don't want the general population to know a truth or know a beauty because it gives them less control such as Mustapha Mond explains in chapter 16-17. Also much of the world is very unfamiliar with the truth and beauty because they are figuratively speaking locked away such as people in North Korea where 40% of the population has no internet and doesn't know a man has landed on the moon.

Seminar Reflection for Brave New World

The one comment I really appreciated and thought was deep and well thought about was when George said, “Happiness is more of a feeling you get when you accomplish something and its hard work but you just keep working through it and getting happier as you do it.”
This made me react in way of finding a realization and knowing how to fix myself as a student and a person because I love finding myself happier from creating a piece of work and getting a good grade or a good paycheck. Also he made me think of a way I usually find myself in and its when I get lazy and I don’t want to work but I want to get a good grade and I say its good enough even if its not just because I don't feel like I made a connection with the teacher and the content and having a connection with a teacher is the only way to get me to do good in their class by doing the work because if that relationship isn't there it’s like I get lazy immediately and stop listening.
In this seminar I thought I did very well in creating deeply thought comments and making people look deeper into the question. Also I invited others to talk and I felt like a leader in this seminar. I've grown since last semester in a few ways. Mainly I’ve connected stronger with my teachers and I've tried harder than I did last semester. Also I've grown as a writer because I use to not be able to create a T-paragraph to save my life and I've really grown in my deeper thinking. I can look at things from all sides now and not have to bias to one side without looking deep into all aspects of both sides.
One of the key ideas from the book i'll take away is that in my life i've been kind of coasting and doing as i please, trying to make happiness but i was blown away in this book how much the characters rely on fake happiness and i'm going to try my best to find a true happiness for myself. Also i will keep in mind to deeply think about key points when reading a book mainly because i enjoy finding small interesting parts and writing them down. This makes me better at finding words and key points. This project has helped me become a better reader because the Brave New World book is a very challenging book just because of the vocabulary.
