Socialization Through Race and Gender
By: Gabe Garcia
The media including ,friends, family, tv, movies, school, and computers all socialize according to our race and gender. The media has taught a large portion of people how to act or look by their race and gender. Appearing as a white male i have been socialized to a certain socialized entitlement, to get what i want, to have money,material things, and to be able to more because of my race. Ive also been stereotyped as a man, to be manly and to not cry, that crying is a sign of weakness. For example, when i fell off my bike at age seven, my friend caleb said there were girls watching and i couldn't cry.
As a white male, i've been stereotyped to know that i am superior to other races such as, Black, Hispanic, Asian, and Native American.
This is explained in the article, The Invisible Knapsack, Although not true it explains how the white race has power over other races and that somehow we are superior. All of this is very stereotypical and shoved into our very susceptible minds.
My sisters and mother have developed certain qualities, that i have picked up on. These qualities are considered “girly” and accepted as feminine in society. According to gender stereotypes, such as the one in the movie, Mean Girls, it gives the impression that straight men must be strong and fit and do many sports and the girls must be caked with makeup to be considered attractive.
This has affected my family by me needing to be strong independent jock sort of guys and my sisters needing to wear more makeup and stylish clothes to be attractive and to feel confident. Gay men generally must be a mix between these two very disgusting stereotypes. Many homosexual men and women i know have been able to break these gender norms such as gay men appearing more effeminate and gay women appearing more masculine.
Now if we mix the two, race and gender, we have stereotypes and racism such as black men are supposedly good at basketball and enjoy chicken, this is an insanely racist stereotype, and white men talk funny, make a lot of money and can’t dance.
This is going back to the article The Invisible Knapsack, when it says “white men have power over black men”. Centuries of white dominance over other races and cultures has lead to a prevalent belief that white men are superior. This has affected me by my feeling uncomfortable around black men and women because i feel like, in a way i could come off as racist, which is a fear of mine because i've been socialized to be afraid of it which is a positive socialization.
These kinds of socializations and stereotypes are represented in my mask. The hand is my influence and the pieces of the mask are separate pieces of my personality that have different symbols showing my point that i have been influenced and broken up into several different pieces in order to fit in. The symbols are the male and female symbols and the Martin Luther King Jr. Flag is for equalization and the quotes are for all of the above
All in my entire mask is showing the influence of our society and the way it forms us through our race and gender to be positive or negative.

Tragedy project
Graphic Novel
Script
Prologue:
(A small village in Ghana, Africa. Women are in the sheds making a dinner for their husbands and sons. Men come in, shouting. They go into to the huts. Gunfire starts and the men from the village run in with knives. All you can see is men stabbing women and children, and children killing children. Young Ashiba is stuck watching his mother be stabbed in the back of the neck repeatedly by a young boy his age. He’s hearing her screams and can’t help because he is frozen, with fear.
(Ashiba wakes up in his fathers shed, In a cold sweat).
Ashiba: (Crying) Mom!
Taruke: ( Door bursts open) What’s wrong!
Ashiba: I had a dream about mom again.
Taruke: That was a long time ago
Taruke: Just shut up and get out of bed, I need help in the back. I know you had such a good life with her
(Ashiba gets up and goes to the yard)
Taruke: Give me that axe.
(Ashiba hands Taruke an axe)
Chop!!
(Taruke cuts another chicken head, Ashiba looks at it like it is his mother’s head rolling into the dirt and her dragging her head along the straw on the ground.)
Ashiba: Why do you do that to them?
Taruke: We need the money. We’re broke son. It’s either kill the chickens or spend another night with hunger pains like everyone in this God forsaken village does. Its more than you’re doing.
Ashiba: Don’t you feel bad? killing them?
Taruke: Nope they're just stupid birds. Go take them to market. Take this
Ashiba: (taking chicken) Fine!
( Ashiba gets up and walks down to the river bay.)
Taruke: I need money, and I get what I need, one way or another. I love my son, but I can’t afford him anymore.
(Ashiba is at the market he walks past a man, selling people, like animals)
Slave Owner: Three healthy men here! good workers! ( walking past vendors)
Fruit salesman: Would you like an orange, young man? Half price!
(Ashiba walks through the sales tents and by the merchants he finds a nice square where he can sell the chickens.)
Ashiba: Chickens! 3 Cedis per chicken!
Slave owner: Ashiba, hello, I’ll buy your chickens.
Ashiba: Who are you?
Slave owner: A friend of your fathers, I was just talking to him, I paid quite a lot of money for his finest possession.
Ashiba: Oh, and what’s that?
Slave owner: Come with me. (Punching Ashiba)
(The slave owner grabs him, and carries him away to his boat. He puts a bag on Ashiba’s head, and binds his hands, Ashiba could feel the butt of the gun smack his head [painfully, and the young boy falls to the ground, unconscious.)
Chorus: It is unfair. Ashiba has been
stolen wrongly, like an animal,
and is being brought to a farm
to work as a slave. Many children
share his fate. I am sorry Ashiba,
for soon you too will be broken.
Scene 2.
(Ashiba wakes up, head pounding. He does not recognize where he is. He has just been taken away from his home with no explanation. Another boy walks up to Ashiba)
Cocoa Slave: The cocoa farmers bought you away from your dad for 300 celis (90$). Your father has given you to them. These men aren't kind men Look around, you are on a cold mat, on the ground. We have all been brought here.
Ashiba: ( waking up in a haze) What happened?
Slave owner: Get up now!!! New kid, come with me, I’ll show you what to do. Do a good job and I won’t have to lash you, finish your daily work and you get fed, got it?
Ashiba: Who are you?
Slave owner: I’ll tell you when you can talk. Climb the tree cut down the pods with the machete, climb down the tree, cut open the pod with the machete, get out seeds, repeat. Got it, or are you too stupid to figure it out?
Ashiba: No, I got it.
Chorus: Ashiba climbs the tree and after countless
cuts from his knife and falling from the tree his
hands are rubbed raw and his feet are bleeding.
Once the blisters fade it is easier for Ashiba to endure
long hours of work day and night for weeks on end.
It is a terrible thing that has happened. A sweet little boy
has been turned brute. Why, why has this happened, and for what?
Scene 3:
(Ashiba is getting stronger, used to working in the farm now, but he has lost his will to live and realizes that he cannot trust anyone.)
Chorus: Ashiba you are sick and your skin is
rotting from the blisters you are enduring too many
beatings and aimless fists. You are beaten and bruised,
Ashiba you must run, these people don’t plan to
let you free, you're killing yourself!
(Ashiba wakes up and walks to his tree and starts climbing. Out of nowhere, a Guard at the farm runs to ashiba and pulls him from his tree. Guard pulls out machette and cuts ashiba, )
Ashiba: Aahhh!!! Stop!!! Please I beg you!!!
Chorus:The Guard drops to knees, choking ashiba,
The guard grabs his knife and stabs Ashiba in the
ribs slicing in between like a piece of meet. The
guard crawls to the top of ashiba and
sits on his chest so he can’t move.
Guard: Your dead kid!
Chorus:After Ashiba tries to crawl away whimpering,
the guard jumps on top of him. He throws his fist
as hard as he can into Ashiba’s face and grabs the
back of his hair and pulls it as hard as he can, then
lets go leaving his neck to sag. Disfigured and dismembered
Ashiba tries to crawl but as he gets close to the river the
guard stabs his knife into Ashiba’s foot and staples him
to the ground. Ashiba cries in fear as the man grabs
turns Ashiba around to see his face and Ashiba cries
with shock, for his father is the one holding him, beating
him. Ashiba, beaten turns, and with his last bit of
energy, he punches his father off of him and gets away.
As he lies on his bunk and slowly loses consciousness,
he thinks about what he has just done to his own father.
He fills with anger at the Slave Master and the farm. He
has lost his joy, and his empathy. He does not feel sorrow anymore.
(The next day, Ashiba can hardly walk. All the other kids have gone to work for the day. The Slave Master comes up to Ashiba’s mat and pulls him up.)
Slave Master: Why are you not working?!!
Ashiba: (mumbling to himself and stumbling to a tree ) I will, It’s what I do, I climb, I cut, I open, all day, all year, all my life. There’s nothing left of me, you stole it all pig!
Chorus: Ashiba is done. He is too hurt to work,
yet he does. Too broken to be, but he is. It is
something wrong that has been done to him.
He has not been killed, but his life has been
taken. Ashiba walks to a tree, climbs higher then
he has in all the time he’s been there. He grabs a
branch, but it is not secure, he falls all the way to
the ground, all the way to his last
breath. A terrible thing, the farm has taken
everything from him now, there is nothing left.

Project Reflection
Greek Tragedy Project Reflection
Gabe Garcia
The thing I am most proud of in this project is the art that Brinn and I put together for the graphic novel. Its my favorite because it took the most work out of anything else in the project. Also it was the first time I had done a graphic novel and I was surprised how well it turned out. The pictures and words we had to incorporate made this project look better than I was expecting it to.
For an incoming student I would tell him or her to start on the writing early and get it done and then work on the visual pieces because the writing was the most challenging to make tragic. I would also say not to do fast work because it won't be good if rushed, it will be better for you and the people looking at it if you take time to make it beautiful work.
For me working in partners helped a lot because I couldn't have done all of the work in two weeks by myself. Also it was nice having someone to rely on other pieces of the project instead of bringing in the materials myself. Partners for me works better than being alone because we can rely on each other and get a better grade.
The most challenging part of it was, my partner and I would change small pieces without telling each other and it kinda made it more stressful trying to get everything put together. Also the way we had to draw everything really put a damper things because we almost couldn't get the drawings done on time. The most challenging task for me was coloring the novel because we didn't have the right type of pens or pencils to make the clothing and backgrounds and people look realistic. We overcame it by taking too much time with colored pencils trying to make the clothes look like they weren't scribbled on.
Also we needed to put marker over our colored pencils because it didn't look good which also took too much time. I had a lot of fun doing this project and I learned a lot from it. This was one of my favorite projects i've done so far.

Model United Nations
1. This project was being assigned to a country and researching and finding their opinion on a crisis and finding a way to create a solution to the problem. My country was Chile and we had the problem of the North Korea nuclear power crisis. I joined with several other countries and came to a conciseness by quoting a docket and arguing a point. After we finished with North Korea we went on to the Israel Palestine conflict. This consisted of writing several dockets and solutions and speeches towards finding a solution to their conflict. The solution we came to was at a1 added to d1 and it was consisted of a peaceful two state solution and not forcing anyone to do anything so they feel in charge.
reflection
This project was extremely fun and interesting but also very tedious and hard but when you get to the college for the model UN exhibition its all becomes worth it because you can throw out all of your information and make a resolution for the crisis at hand.
Also this project shows you how to be good at public speaking and your writing skills increase and become very creative and its been one of my favorite projects this year.
I worked my hardest during this project as i ever have for another project and found myself in mediocre results and didn't enjoy feeling like i hadn't done well. For this project i needed to work harder and create pieces of writing with more evidence than i have this whole semester. This project took a lot of really unfortunate turns for me but in the end i enjoyed it a lot .During this project the HOHAM I showed was perseverance because i kept getting bad grades on my papers and i kept working towards getting a better grade. During the conference i showed more of evidence because i gathered all of my evidence and showed i new what i was talking about. I had a lot of evidence to show. My view of this project got better as i started to do better and create more of an interesting speech and paper. The greatest problem i faced in this project was that i didn't know what i was doing for a lot of the writing and constantly needed help from class mates and Sara Price. It was partly that i wasnt paying attention to the details in the writing prompts which was unfortunate for me because my grade was going down. Also i had a large amount of distractions with reading the prompts. I would watch the videos that came with the writing prompts first and no pay attention to what i had to do for the other parts of the packets we got.
The most interesting speech in my opinion was Coleman Bader's because of how much information he could pack into his speech in a time limit of three minutes and how he talked was very powerful and he truly filled the roll of his country the USA. He had a large amount of evidence and seemed to know exactly what he was talking about and he had a good idea of what his countries perspective was on the Israel Palestine conflict in the Middle East.
The best resolution was the 1d that Coleman stood behind. We amended 1d with a few pieces of 1a which i thought was the best way to go. The best comment was by Brinn Nelson because of how she said showed people what they did wrong that wasn't valid for the conference she asked " Who would be in charge of putting peace keepers in Israel and how would they keep peace?" she said to Honduras (Sophia Blanchard). A lot of the students had very good points, comments, questions, and resolutions. Over all this was a very fun and interesting project and i hope others find this project as fun as i did.

Chile and the Israel Palestine Conflict
Although the Palestinians were the first people to be in Israel and have the deeds to their land, the Israelis won the six day war between the European Jews now called the Israelis and the Palestinians who once lived in Israel, and should have the right of the land, also Israel is the only all Jew country in the world.
Chile believes that Israel has the right to keep their land and not have to move. Mainly because Chile is a very close ally of Israel and doesn't want to help Palestinians in fear of losing that alliance. In the article Israel and Chile Cooperation by Barak Ravid, it states “Chile and Israel have been in several military acts together such as Israel and Chile helping eachother to spy on Iran” (Ravid 1). Israel was working with the Chilean government to spy on the Iranian Embassy in Chile, according to a diplomatic cable released by WikiLeaks. In the article Israel and Chile Cooperation by Barack Ravid it states “Chile and Israel have been helping eachother find information on Iran”(Ravid 1). My country is also an ally of the United States and the U.S agrees that Palestinians lost their land and don't deserve it back because they are stubborn and didn't want as much as eighty percent of the land as it was presented to them at one time by Israel. A pair of testy public exchanges appear to have undone what good was created between the Israeli and U.S. governments during a high profile visit by President Barack Obama .
In an interview broadcast on both Israeli and Palestinian Kerry on TV questioned Israel's seriousness about peace with the Palestinians. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Vowed not to cave into concessions to the Palestinians and also saying he "utterly rejects" an emerging nuclear deal between world powers and Iran on which the U.S didn't appreciate (Hart 1).
My country Chile is a peaceful country and doesn't believe in a violent solution so if the Palestinians would take 60 percent of country and the Israelis would have the other 40 percent to practice their religion as they claim to of been born there.
During the last two years, the bonds between Chile and Israel intensified in practically all fields.
Israel is a big ally of Chile and they support whatever Israel decides to do with the Palestinians as long as its a peaceful resolution.

Resolution for Israel Palestine conflict
Israel Palestine Conflict
Chile (Gabe Garcia)
Finding the solution to the Israeli Palestinian Conflict
The General Assembly
Recognizing that there have been several actions attempted towards resolving the Israel
Palestine conflict such as Israel offering Palestine 40 percent of the west bank on which is Palestinian territory but the Israelis inhabit,
Noting that Palestine has attacked Israel several times and has still been given offers for a large percentage of the land but yet again has reacted with violence such as riots killing several Israelis in the process,
Only revealing more the stubbornness and disrespectfulness of the Palestine people towards Israel,
Bearing in mind that Israel made demands that Palestinian people stay out of Israel according to the article Right of return: Palestinian dream by Heather Sharp it states “With Population of 6.6 million of which 5.4 million are jewish opening the doors to a potential 4 million returnees would threaten the demographic balance - thus the very nature of the world’s only jewish state”,
Believing that a peaceful solution is needed to reduce the Israel and Palestine tensions such as a two state solution, the borders would be on the west bank and if negotiated possibly a small percentage of the main land,
Knowing that previous attempts of using the giving away of percentage of land has failed in the past making Palestine angry leaving them to start fights and make the Israelis violent towards them,
Believing that our solution will be successful from all sides,
1. Recognizing Chile will put in peacekeepers to help the Palestinians move in and keep them peaceful and away from weapons with the help of Egypt because of the friendship it has with each country;
2. Believing that Chile has the power to negotiate with Israel because of their close friendship and strong ally system
3. Noting that Chile has room to put Israelis if needed, with only a 17.46 million person population Chile could potentially take in another 4 million Palestinians since the land is so big;
4. Recalling that if Palestinians moved into Israel, Chile could take Palestinians that can fit in Israel;
5. Taking note that Chile can pull away from giving Israel supplies if they don't agree leaving the country unable to grow its own vegetables fast enough to feed the population and medical supplies will deplete but the only way this would work is if Egypt or the United states convinced them to do so;
6. Recognizing Palestinians could possibly be persuaded away from their land with better land such as Egypt or Pakistan by the UN or by one of their close allies, transportation there could be provided by Israel because Israel would most likely be happy to send them off;
7. Keeping in mind the Palestinians could move their camps into part of the west bank and where they currently live so then they could have part of the land and they could have a wider area so less sickness and dangerous living accrue;
8. Denies the fact that Palestinians want to move back because of the lack of room and because they lost the six day war therefore losing the land to the Israelis;
9. Accepts the taking of the 40% of the West bank by the Palestinians for easier living and part of the land;
10.Fully aware of the living situation of the Palestinians and does not have a solution if they will not comply to the negotiation given by Israel;

Happiness project
Happiness Prewrite
4/29/2014 Draft 1
The pursuit for a stronger happiness
Gabe Garcia
Finding happiness is important because without it there isn't much reason to be alive.. It isn't just a feeling, we need it to survive, to have a personality. As a whole I think that the average human in the world today that has accepted the society and thinks they're happy in it, won't be happy in the long run and they won't be excited with their life. The thing that makes us happy is dopamine in our brain but the events or moments that trigger it is what matters. A person who buys a lot of objects and stuffs their face with gourmet food might not be the happiest person because they are dulled by the items they are surrounded by. The knowledge we want to have is what makes us happy and what are the events that trigger the dopamine in our brain. Is it really a hard answer to find?
The main source of happiness in a person brain is the dopamine but the thing everyone wants to know is how to cause this happiness. In the movie “Happy” it describes people with a simple way of living. These people are the Bhutan tribe and they are so content and happy because they are close to one another. The Bhutan people are happy because they rely on each other and they can trust everyone in the village. These people help each other to survive. This makes them feel safer, protected, and cared for. The Bhutan tribe hunts together and helps everyone in the tribe and they create deep relationships with one another. The children are cared for and played with by the mothers and the fathers and they dance around the bonfire at night. The hunting and games are all part of their culture. They have nothing that dilutes and ruins this wall of peace and happiness they have built.
This simple living situation these people have is so strongly founded that they are always cared for and they are living in true happiness.
The factor of whether we believe we are living a full life is what can make us happy, such as having family and friends and most of all a type of relationship. In a country named Okinawa island these Asian residents are so closely bound together that they are all the best of friends. A woman says “ If a tragedy happened in the neighborhood everyone would be out trying to help.” These people do everything together, from races with small children to gossip between the older people gardening with each other and making a living being happy. These people in Okinawa island are the liveliest people at ages from 0 to 107 are the liveliest people because of their activities and fun they create through this small country. On every friday in another town than the last one there is a parade of dancers and dragons that everyone will come out to see because of the fun and entertainment the parade provides.
The parade invites all ages to come up and dance and play and be happy with their family and friends. These people are very entwined with one another they do everything together and they seem to live very full lives with each other.
Meaning is everything in happiness because without meaning it doesn't affect anyone and its not worth happening. In the article, “There is more to life than being happy.” It states, “It is the very pursuit of happiness, that thwarts happiness.” This statement is true to the society i live in. The united states is ranked 17th in the world on a happiness scale. This is due to the mass amount of antidepressants given out that actually do the opposite of making people happy. Like it says in the article,” Theres more to life than being happy”, it says,” If you give, you give happiness. if you take happiness you're a taker.”
In the documentary, “I am”, it opened my eyes and made me realize that people are almost like robots, everyone is interested in the same things and they do the same things. They consume. Most people in middle class or rich countries think that more stuff will make them happier and thats why alot of them are depressed when the things they have turn out to be less than satisfied. This is because an object doesn't have a lot of worth to a person's feelings. Twice as much stuff won't make you twice as happy, it only leaves you feeling more comfortable and to me comfort is no fun. People that gain more items and objects lose the ability to gain things that matter such as empathy, hardship,suffering, and true happiness.
The cost for happiness we pay for happiness is at the cost of others happiness like in the story,” The ones who walk away from Omela”. We are all happy as long as someone is suffering. In the story, “The ones who walk away from Omela”, everyone is happy as long as a someone suffers and in this story its a little kid locked in a closet covered in his own feces and he hardly has enough food to eat. Anyone who makes this boy happy or shows him and kindness will result in everyone not being happy. This related to another project I had done, this story was child labour to make chocolate from cocoa beans in Ghana, Africa. As long as us Americans and other countries get our chocolate we are happy but the kids in Ghana are being taken advantage of and put into human trafficking.
The amount of importance on examining happiness is extreme because of the situations it could help such as war or genocide, a fully correct reason or cause on happiness could change the world because it could actually generate a type of peace everyone has needed. How we would create a society that values authentic happiness i'm not sure about because no matter how happy the general public there are still angry people and its in their genes, 40% of the happiness one person can enjoy is in their genes. the other 60% is their personality and their activities. The influential part of the society, where I and others would influence other people to be happier could help like in Central Park, New York there are more than often people with free hug signs and they just make people happier by making them feel important by giving out hugs. Even though this is a small act that might not seem of much importance its still helping a greater cause of creating a happier world. Even though its small its still where we have to start.

Happiness Reflection
The happiness project was assigned so we could find the true meaning of happiness. We watched two movies, the first one was called, "Happy", and "I am". The first movie consisted of interviews and evidence of people being unhappy in their environment such as New York and Denmark. The people in New York thought happiness was making a lot of money and being financially free, resulting in unhappiness. The folk in Denmark think that happiness is in being together and knowing your family is close. Also the people in the movie "I am", in the Japanese islands the people are the best of friends and its all because they are less than a mile away from one another. They play games and create relationships together. This whole project opened my eyes to true happiness vs. fake happiness. Now that I understand true happiness I try my best to make myself happy without needing a new phone or a new wardrobe. This project in my opinion was very fun because of the movies and drawing but it was also very emotional for me. It was emotional because of the people that are so poor and they're in the slums but yet their happier than a millionaire that lives alone in his mansion. If I could I would do this project again and not because I feel that I didn't do well but because of how informative and inspiring it was.
